A garden can be a beautiful thing, I know. My friend, Kelly, in Texas, has
a garden. She refers to herself as a “dirt person.” She says it
is some gene that you either have or you don’t. Some people garden. Some
people don’t. You guessed it. I don’t. Now, it isn’t like
I haven’t tried. When I was a child, my brother and sister and I had a
small garden. I don’t remember exactly what we put seeds down for, but
I remember the zinnias and tomatoes the best. Really fresh garden grown tomatoes
have a very sharp scent that I have never found in the ones in the grocery.
With a garden, I like the result, but I don’t like the process. I’m
not very good at it. I have to work really hard to get a mediocre result. That’s
true of me in most craft types of things. I don’t enjoy making things.
I don’t enjoy growing things. I do enjoy the things themselves when they
are done sometimes. I love walking through the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens
where I grew up. I think it’s great that there are people who enjoy the
process that puts together those well-manicured places with trellises and arches
and roses blooming everywhere. I particularly love roses. My mother grew some
by the side of the red brick house I was raised in. Nothing like it!
I have only been to the Denver Botanical Garden once, I believe. It was a nice
walk, but I don’t live close by, so I doubt I’ll ever go through
again. Boulder, though, has some nice gardens on the Boulder Creek path that
I like. That’s about the only place I really like to get out and take
a walk. A garden by the path makes the walk so much nicer. I see how someone
has tended the garden, weeding it and watering it to make this beautiful place
for me to enjoy.
My friend, Laura, teaches horticulture. She love to garden. She is good enough
to get paid for it! If you love to garden like Kelly and Laura, there are tons
of resources on the web to give you tips. Since most communities no longer have
a place where people gather to discuss their crops, the internet is taking up
the slack. Do a Google search on “garden tips” and you’ll
find enough to keep you busy for a while. Let me know when you want someone
to walk through and appreciate your work!
